Frequently Asked Questions

Earning

Earning money on Maven Xchange can seem like it’s “automatic.”  Many users simply do what they would normally do elsewhere on Maven Xchange instead; and, as a result, they earn.

Your earnings will match your effort, your creativity, taste and expertise, your passion for shopping, and the number of friends and followers with whom you share your boards and products. Referring other people to Maven Xchange also lets you further increase your earnings through referral bonuses.  So, your earnings at Maven Xchange are up to you. There’s no limit to your success at Maven.

We can’t predict what your earnings might be since everyone is different.  But, as an example, consider a theoretical user of Maven Xchange who only uses it occasionally and who has a limited social network:

  • She shares boards and products that result in 3 sales transactions per month by her friends and followers.
  • She refers 3 new Maven Xchange users each month who are just like her.

With some reasonable assumptions and that very modest level of activity, 3 sales and 3 referrals each month, she will grow her earnings so that she is making roughly $1,000 per year on an ongoing basis in extra spending money.

If you dedicate more time, drive more sales and refer more new users, you’ll earn more.  Your success is dependent on you.

How will my earnings be calculated?

How often is my Dashboard updated?

Your Dashboard is updated nightly with any transaction activity data we receive from our "affiliate network" partners, including any sales, returns and adjustments from retailers and the associated impacts on Commission Shares and Referral Bonuses. Affiliate networks are companies that work with retailers to manage affiliate marketing programs and track sales-related activity. Retailers report sales and commissions to the affiliate networks. The affiliate networks then process that data and distribute it to us. Various factors can cause delays in reporting of earnings activity on your Dashboard. Some of those are:
  • Processing delays at retailers in reporting sales, commission and adjustment transactions.
  • Commission timing policies at retailers. For example, some retailers report sales and commissions on the date of purchase. But, many retailers report sales and commissions only when products are shipped.  There are other variations as well. Most retailers report sales and commissions within 7 days of a purchase transaction (assuming the product has shipped and isn't backordered).
  • Processing delays at affiliate networks. In most cases, affiliate networks report sales and commission information they receive at least daily. While infrequent, there can be data processing issues within an affiliate network company that causes delays.

How will I be paid?

We distribute payments using Paypal. And, we distribute those payments using a verified email address in your profile. When we distribute payments to you for your earnings, you will be notified in two ways:
  • We will update your Dashboard in Maven Xchange to include a payment transaction on the date the payment is processed with Paypal.
  • You will receive an email notification from Paypal, using the email address from your Maven Xchange profile, notifying you that you have a payment from us.
To receive your payment, you may then sign in to your Paypal account (or create one, if you don't have a Paypal account already) and indicate how you wish to receive the funds. It is very important that you ensure you have a verified email address in your Maven Xchange profile. Both the Dashboard page as well as your Profile page will display a warning message to you if your email address is not verified. If it is not verified at the time we process payments, your payment will not be processed since we would not want to send your payment to an email address that we cannot verify you own. Your payment will therefore be delayed.

When will I be paid?

We distribute payments monthly, a few business days after the end of each month. The amount of your payment each month is determined by two factors:
  • We pay earnings to you for a purchase transaction at a retailer only when we have collected the corresponding commission from the retailer. Retailers generally pay their commissions to us between 30 and 60 days after a purchase transaction in order to allow for returns.
  • We do not issue payments for less than $20.00.
At all times, your Dashboard "balance" will show the amount of unpaid earnings in your account.

Will I receive an IRS form 1099 from Maven Xchange?

No. We use Paypal to distribute earnings to users of Maven Xchange. Subject to IRS guidelines and threshold amounts, your earnings at Maven Xchange will be reported to you and to the IRS by Paypal. You should sign in to your PayPal account to determine if you will be receiving a Form 1099-K from PayPal. Please note you are obligated to report to the IRS any income you receive from us, whether or not that income is reported on a Form 1099 or other tax report. We do not provide tax advice. We recommend you consult with your own tax advisor.

Why is my payment less than my earnings balance on the Dashboard?

When we process payments to you, we don't necessarily issue a payment for the full earnings balance shown on your Dashboard.  Your earnings are reported to you in the Dashboard before they are eligible to be paid to you.  There are two factors that determine your payment each month:
  • We pay earnings to you for a purchase transaction at a retailer only when we have collected the corresponding commission from the retailer. Retailers generally pay their commissions to us between 30 and 60 days after a purchase transaction in order to allow for returns.
  • We do not issue payments for less than $20.00.

I think I'm missing a commission. Why might that happen?

It may simply be delayed, not missing. While transactions will generally be posted to your Dashboard within 14 days for most retailers, some merchants take even longer based on how their business operates. Hotels, for example, normally don't report a transaction until a guest's stay is complete. So, reporting of the sale in your Dashboard may simply be delayed. However, even if a purchase occurred as a result of a product recommendation you made, you may still not earn a Commission Share on that transaction. While it doesn't happen very often, there are circumstances that would lead to this:
  • A shopper may not purchase the product within the the period of time allowed after clicking through from your product clipping. This "purchase window" varies by retailer, from as short as an hour to as long as 60 days.  Most retailers pay commissions as long as your referred shopper purchases an item within 14 days.
  • A shopper may clear their browser cookies or have cookie settings or other technology components that disable tracking of affiliate links. In these cases, the retailer doesn't know the source of the referred shopper. So, they will not pay a commission.
  • After clicking on your product clipping, a shopper may click on a different paid link from a third-party before purchasing at the retailer. In this case, any commission will be paid to the third party instead.
  • A retailer may not identify your specific product clipping as the source of the sale.
  • A retailer may determine that some merchandise is ineligible for commissions. Sometimes this occurs with clearance merchandise or gift cards, but it can occur with any merchandise and is at the complete discretion of the retailer.
  • A retailer may determine that transactions generated from your product clippings are not bona fide transactions, such as attempts to buy and return merchandise in order to generate commissions.  See the Community Guidelines page.
  • Retailers may adjust or reverse commissions after the initial purchase. This is usually a result of the shopper returning merchandise. When that occurs your Commission Share will be adjusted or reversed as well.
Commissions paid by retailers are always at their sole discretion and may not be contested. If you believe that this is happening routinely (more than 3 times) and that none of the above apply, please contact us on the Get Support page, and we'll research it for you.
